In December 2001 I was in a car crash in Belfast and
suffered a brain injury. I was in a coma for ten and a half weeks spending that time in the Royal Victoria and Foster Green Hospital.
While I was in a coma the doctors told my mum that if I ever came out of the coma I would be a "vegetable". The Doctors wanted to turn off my machine but my mum said no.
10 and a half weeks later I came out of the coma, the doctors had said I would never walk again, but I am now walking with the aid of a rolator.
Prior to my accident I was very active in sport - football, GAA and Boxing, but now my life has been turned uspide down. My injury has affected my speech but like my mobility, with a lot of hard work my speech has improved. I was introduced to Headway by my psychologist in 2010. Probably like everyone else, I enjoy getting out of the house and meeting people with similar experiences. Coming to Headway has changed my opinion of other people with similar injuries in a positive way. I enjoy being in the STAR Project because I can talk to people about the things I still enjoy e.g. Manchester United, GAA and Boxing, and the staff are sound as a pound!
