Visit from the Youth Justice Agency for ABI week

Three of our service users met with young people from the Youth Justice Agency today in an emotional and powerful meeting in which they shared their stories and explained how brain injury, resulting from assault, has changed their lives. Youth justice visit 1

The day was organised as part of Action for Brain Injury (ABI) week which runs from 14 - 18 May. We invited some of the young people involved in the Youth Justice Agency along to our premises to hear the stories of some of our service users to demonstrate first-hand the serious consequences of acquired brain injury.

Three of the participants at Headway Belfast shared their story with the young people and answered questions on how it has turned their life upside down.

Hugh McInally was the victim of assault four years ago and was one of the brave participants who took part today, he said : “Having a brain injury completely changed my life overnight. I had to come out of work, my concentration became really poor and I lost the strength in my right side which caused me problems physically. I was no longer able to play football and my young children couldn’t understand why I wasn’t able to be as active. Friends started to treat me differently too, it was really hard to come to terms with.

youth justice visit 2He added: I’m really glad to have had the opportunity to talk to these young people today and hopefully get a powerful message through to them. The effects of my brain injury aren’t obvious to others, but although they are very much hidden they are still a reality.’

Brain Injury is the biggest cause of disability globally and around 2,000 people are affected every year in Northern Ireland. The biggest cause is road traffic accidents which accounts for 40% but with one in every ten brain injuries caused by assault it is still a very prominent issue and one which Fiona McCabe, CEO of Headway Belfast, feels needs to be addressed.

‘It was a big decision for us to invite some of the young people from the youth Justice agency but when we put the idea forward to some of our participants, they were keen to share their story of how their brain injury dramatically changed their life.

She added: Not all brain injuries are a result of an accident, a significant proportion are preventable. It’s a very important message we are sending out to these young people and hopefully a very hard hitting message as well that brain injury changes lives forever. Today, our service users have demonstrated real bravery in telling their story and very openly and honestly answered a range of questions about their injury.’

Lynne Young, Practitioner with the Youth Justice Agency said the day was very beneficial for the young people: “We’re very grateful to Headway Belfast for inviting us along today and to the three brave men who shared their story with us. A key part of our work is to ensure the young people understand the serious and life changing effect their actions can have, as much as we try to teach that, seeing it first-hand has been a real eye opener for them.’

ABI week takes place all this week from 14 – 18 May and we have lots organised to promote the understanding of acquired brain injury, its effects and causes.

Throughout the week we will be visiting schools across Belfast bringing them our ‘Cycle Helmet Show’ which highlights the importance of wearing a helmet as well as our ‘hats for Headway’ day which is a fundraiser taking place on Friday 18 May.

Sainsbury's charity of the year

charity of the year

Sainsbury's are getting ready to take nominations for their 2013 chosen Charity of the Year and we need you to nominate us!

There will be stands displayed in Sainsbury's stores all over Northern Ireland from Wednesday 9 May - Wednesday 23 May where you can pick up your application form and nominate Headway Belfast.

We would really benefit from a collaboration with a big retail chain such as Sainsbury's as it would help us to continue to grow and develop our services for brain injury survivors in Northern Ireland.

Filling out an application form is quick and easy but don't forget you can always contact us if you'd like some help.

So remember to keep an eye out for the stands in Sainsbury's stores from next Wednesday 9 May until Wednesday 23 May.

Volunteers required

We are currently looking for volunteers for both our befriending scheme and our upcoming Park Mile Walk event which is taking place at the end of May.

Befriending volunteers

Befriending is a relationship between a volunteer and a recipient which is initiated, supported and monitored by Headway Belfast. Befrienders offer support and information for brain injury survivors, including those who experience or are at risk of, social exclusion. A volunteer befriender will work with the individual, enabling them to enjoy a better quality of life and build new relationships.

Are you available for a few hours each week? Would you like to help someone living with a brain injury? If you think you fit the bill then we want to hear from you!

Our demand for our befriending service is currently very high so we’re looking for enthusiastic and reliable volunteers to take on these roles.

If you are interested in the above volunteering role please download an application form and email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Hats off to our politicians

Health Minister Edwin Poots was joined by a host of other politicians from across all the political parties at Stormont as they came together and donned their best headwear to launch upcoming ‘Action for Brain Injury’ (ABI) week and to show their support for Headway Belfast.hats off

Our ‘hats for Headway’ day takes place on Friday 18 May as part of ABI week which runs from 14 – 18 May; and schools, organisations and colleges are being urged to join their politicians and get involved by wearing their hat to school or work to raise money for Headway Belfast.

Fiona McCabe, CEO of Headway Belfast said: ‘We’re delighted to have the support of so many of our politicians who act as representatives for not only Belfast but the wider areas. The people who use our services come from all walks of life and we cater for those not just in Belfast but also those surrounding areas including Lisburn, Newtownards and Downpatrick.

‘ABI week is a very important week for us and a great opportunity to highlight that brain injury can happen to anyone and when it does your life is changed forever. Brain injury is the biggest cause of disability globally and a very prominent issue here in Northern Ireland with 2,000 people being affected every year in Northern Ireland alone. We work with over 80 survivors of acquired brain injury every week and our aim is to enhance and rebuild their lives following their injury.

Lisa and Edwin Poots 2She added: ‘Wearing your hat to school or work is a fun way to get involved in ABI week and also a great way of raising funds for Headway Belfast. All schools and organisations can get involved by wearing your hat to school or work on Friday 18 May and donating just £1, we’ll provide collection buckets – it really couldn’t be simpler.’

An 'action' packed week

This year’s Action for Brain Injury Week falls between 14 and 20 May and we’ve got lots planned to help raise awareness about acquired brain injury, its consequences and causes. Here’s just a sneak preview on what’s happening that week.

Monday 14 May - Youth Justice Agency visit to Headway

One of the main causes of brain injury in Northern Ireland are road traffic accidents, but there’s also a significant number of brain injuries caused through violent assault. As part of Action for Brain Injury Week, we invited the Youth Justice Agency to bring along some young people to the Headway Belfast premises to teach them about the consequences of assault and to see for themselves the real and devastating effects of acquired brain injury. Three of our brave service users will be sharing their stories with the young people and answering their questions on how being a victim of assault has changed their lives.

Monday 14 – Friday 18 - Bringing local schools 'The Cycle Helmet Show'

All week long we’ll be visiting schools across Belfast bringing them our ‘Cycle Helmet Show’ where we highlight the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling, skateboarding, rollerblading or partaking in any other dangerous sporting activity!

The Cycle Helmet Show will take place on

Monday 14 May: Forthriver Primary School

Tuesday 15 May: Penrhyn Preparatory School

Wednesday 16 May: St. Joseph's Primary School

Thursday 17 May: St Theresa's Primary School

Friday 18 May: Springhill Primary School

Friday 18 May -Wear your Hat for Headway

We finish off the week by urging everyone to wear your hat for Headway! It wouldn’t be ABI week without the opportunity for schools, colleges and companies to wear hats to school or work. We’re urging all organisations, big and small, to wear their hat for Headway.

It’s simple, all you do is turn up to school or work wearing any hat, ridiculously extravagant or modestly simple - it’s up to you and donate £1 to Headway for the privilege. You can appoint someone from your school or organisation to collect the money and we can provide collection boxes and buckets.
